On my Mazda Bongo I fitted a Fiamma Bike Rack. It's a great bike rack, but I wanted to change the colour to black to fit in with the colour scheme.
So I broke out the spray cans and set to work!
I use an etch primer and matt black alloy wheel spray for this job. The etch primer is a must for spraying on aluminium (something I learned from spraying my solar panel with regular primer!!).
No, not that kind of strip down..sheesh!
It' a fairly simple process, but I took a lot of pictures so I could reference them later when biulding the rack back up again.
I clean and rub everything down with alcohol to get it squeaky clean.
Next I mask off all the red rubber parts as I didn't want them sprayed black.
I hung parts from a line to make it easier. A quick note of caution, don't spray in a gale like I did, just don't do it.
After several coats of primer I go back and spray my little heart out until all is black.
After leaving everything to dry it was time to reassemble the parts and get it back on the van.
I have to say that this does improve the look of the van, I also sprayed the roof bars at the same time to match.
I might, at some point, add some matt black vinyl to high wear areas to keep things looking nice.
Thanks for reading!
Cheers, Ian :)
